The independent artist's release day checklist
What actually needs to happen before, during, and after release day, a practical checklist for independent artists and labels who are handling the promo themselves.
Most of what determines whether a release lands well happens before release day, not on it. By the time the track is live, you're mostly executing a plan you should have set up weeks earlier.
Four to six weeks out
Lock the release date and don't move it, playlist pitching and press both run on lead time, and moving a date after you've pitched burns the relationship. Get metadata right (correct genre, BPM, key, credits) since fixing it after release rarely fully propagates across platforms. Pitch to editorial playlists through each platform's own submission tool, most require two to four weeks' notice.
Two to three weeks out
Send an early promo wave to press and curators who need lead time to actually schedule something. Put up a pre-save smart link and start pushing it in every announcement post, this is the window where pre-saves actually accumulate.
Release week
Send the DJ-facing promo wave, closer to release is fine here since urgency helps rather than hurts. Swap the pre-save link over to the live streaming links the moment the track unlocks, don't leave a dead pre-save page up after release. Post across every channel on release day itself, the concentrated attention in the first 24 to 48 hours is what chart and algorithmic systems respond to most.
The week after
Send one follow-up to anyone who opened but didn't act on the release promo, this is where a meaningful chunk of late engagement comes from. Check which segments of your list actually engaged and note it, that's real data for the next release's targeting. Don't immediately drop into planning the next release without first following up on this one, the week after release is still part of this release's cycle.
The mistake that costs the most
Treating release day as the finish line instead of the midpoint. The promo, the follow-up, and the data you collect in the two weeks after are often worth more than anything you did in the two weeks before.
